Project 3

Updated Monday, August 07, 2006 01:48:20 PM.

The Due Date is Monday October 30, 12 noon. Project 3 should be a single Word file. E-mail as an attachment to to the class e-mail account eng_0056@engineering.uiowa.edu (Late fees apply. Do check that the Word file is attached.)

See the web pages on the project and project report for background information.

Remember that a highly professional standard is required. Use page numbers. Include the names of project team members at the start of the document.

Give sources for any drawings etc.

Your task in this homework is to produce:

A. A Detailed Proposed Design

This involves determining a detailed proposed design, based on your assessment of the existing designs, your testing of your initial design and on the materials available for the project.

You will need to produce a drawing of the proposed design and describe it's main features. The drawing can be drawn, scanned and then pasted into the Word document. Alternatively you can use a computer drawing program.

Describe the reasons that you decided on this design.

Grades will be awarded based on the quality and depth of the design rationale.

B. An Economic Analysis

Costs - The  total cost of the design can be calculated as follows:

Each girder  (aka each craft stick) including purchasing, transport and inspection     $1,150
Each short joint (less than 1/3 of the length of a girder)  $375
Each long joint (across more than 1/3 of the length of a girder)$500
Water tank$35,000
Site preparation, water connections  and access$60,000
Planning$35,000

Receipts - The expected receipts (in current dollars) from the operation of the tower are as follows

Year12345
Receipts ($)55,00085,00090,00095,000100,000

Economic Analysis Calculation: Given the above, calculate the Net Present Value and the Internal Rate of Return, assuming an interest (discount) rate of 8%. The costs can be assumed to occur in Year 0. The NPV and IRR are to be calculated in Year 0.

You will need to produce an Excel spreadsheet to do this portion. Paste, using Paste Special, as an Excel object into your Word file.

Grades will be awarded based on the quality and depth of the economic rationale.

C. Expected Performance of Design

Give, with reasons, the anticipated final load bearing capacity of your design.
