Homework 1 - Using Excel and College E-mail

Welcome to the College of Engineering!

An important part of communication within the College of Engineering (CoE) is by e-mail and the goal of HW1 is to allow you to become more familiar with the CoE e-mail system and to make sure that you can access the CoE computer system. Another goal is to allow you to start becoming familiar with using Excel 2007, if you are not already an expert.

Your default UoI e-mail (Hawkmail) can be accessed at  email.uiowa.edu

Log on to ISIS at http://isis.uiowa.edu/ and click on My UIowa on the top banner and then click on "update your email routing". You can then see your alias (your UoI default email address is alias@uiowa.edu) and your Routing Address where your e-mail is routed to.  It is a good idea to change the Routing Address to your engineering account with the address yourHawkID@engineering.uiowa.edu since this has a much larger storage than the default UoI email account. Note 08/26/07: backups on the system mean that any changes are delayed at present.

Then, go to http://webmail.engineering.uiowa.edu/ and check that you can log in.  You can send a test message to alias@uiowa.edu to make sure that it is forwarded correctly. If you want to change your password or forward all mail to an existing e-mail address, then access the CSS Account Management Tools page. If you can't logon, then there may be a problem with your password or with your account and you will need to talk with a TA.

Your task, should you choose to accept it,  is to

  1. Log on on the college system using one of the machines in the Engineering building. If you have problems see the TAs or check with the CSS office on the 1st floor for your account information.
  2. For this part of  HW 1 you must download the Excel 2007 file provided HERE (Process_data_EPS1.xlsx, right click on the link and save the file to your computer. If you have a zip utility on your machine and are using Internet Explorer it may try to save it as a .zip file. If so, just save the file as Process_data_EPS1.xlsx or just save it and rename it later). You can then manipulate the file, save it and attach it to the email you are submitting as the first part of this homework assignment.  You can save it your computer by right-clicking on the mouse and use the Save Target As option to select a location on your computer where the file can be stored. The Excel 2007 file contains hypothetical data generated from machines on various days in a manufacturing facility.  Your task is to

    1. Calculate the average for each column (for each day) and for each row (each machine).  You must use the functions in Excel to do this.
    2. Calculate the sum (the total) of the whole data set, that is the total of all the data.  This must also be done using the functions in Excel.

NOTE: You must use Excel 2007 for this task.

It may be useful to read through this simple users manual that we created to help you with this assignment.

  3. Access the CoE e-mail system through the web site (see below). Use your allocated username and password.
If you want to change your password or forward all mail to an existing e-mail address, then access the CSS Account Management Tools page.
  4. Attach the Excel file  and send it to the  class e-mail account eng_0052@engineering.uiowa.edu

NOTE: YOU MUST USE THE CoE SYSTEM!

DUE DATE FRIDAY August 31  3:30 pm CST

The CoE mail system can be most conveniently accessed through the web site:
