Muskingum Routing Method

The hydrographs at the upstream (inflow) and downstream (outflow) ends of a stream reach were measured during a flood event. Use Excel Solver to determine the parameters K and X of the Muskingum routing method that minimum the sum of the squared errors (Predicted - Observed)2 subject to the constraint that X is between 0 and 0.5.

  1. Set up your calculation in an Excel Spreadsheet, and provide a printout of the solution after optimizations.
  2. Report your optimized values of K and X (with appropriate units).
  3. Provide a plot of the predicted and observed outflow hydrographs (after optimization).
  4. Determine how long does it take for a drop of water to flow from the upstream to downstream ends of the reach (in hours).
