Problem #14
Philips Infiltration Equation

A soil has a sorptivity (S) of 5 cm hr-1/2 and a hydraulic conductivity (K) of 0.4 cm/hr.  Predict the infiltration and cumulative infiltration curves for a constant intensity rainstorm with rainrate i of 6 cm/hr.

  1. Ponding time tp (hours)
  2. Cumulative infiltration at ponding (cm)
  3. Equivalent time origin t0 (hours)
  4. Compute the actual infiltration rate f (cm/hr) at 0, 10, 20, ..., 60 minutes.
  5. Compute the actual cumulative infiltration F (cm) at 0, 10, 20, ..., 60 minutes.
  6. Plot the actual infiltration rate as a function of time (one plot). Be sure to include time tp as a point and label the ponding time on the curve.
  7. Plot the actual cumulative infiltration as a function of time (a second plot). Be sure to include time tp as a point and label the ponding time on the curve.
