Announcements (most
recent
posting is listed first)
The scores for HW7 and for Exam 2 have been
posted on ICON. The exams will be returned to your project
professors next week. The scores written on the exams are lower
than the scores posted on ICON. This is the result of a uniform
adjustment we made after review of student performance on the
exams. All the scores on ICON should generally be interpreted as
90% and above = A, 80% and above = B and so forth. The final
grade for the lecture portion of the course has not yet been
posted.
There is an extra credit opportunity in the form of a Post-Test.
This is nearly the same as the Pre-Test from the beginning of the
course. Extra credit will be earned for each correct answer on
the Post Test. To earn credit, the test must be completed by Dec
1.
Happy Thanksgiving.
The PowerPoint presentation on
Weather Radars
has been posted (as a PDF) on ICON (Content) for Module 5.
Correction to HW#7 Problem 3
— the “correlation coefficient”
calculation
should appear in part d) instead of part b):
b) Naperian (natural) logarithm of balonium versus time using
rectilinear axes.
:
d) Determine the decay constant, k (note that the units for k are days-1)
and the correlation coefficient.
Exam 2 will be held on Tuesday November 7th
at 5:30. Students will go to the same classroom as for Exam 1:
Section A (9:30 class time)
will take the
exam in Lecture Room II Van Allen Hall
(across from Bruegger's on Iowa Avenue);
Section B (11:30 class time) will take the exam in Shambaugh Auditorium
(connected to the North entrance to Main Library on Madison Street);
and Section C (1:30 class time) will take the exam in 1505 SC (our regular
classroom).
For all sections, the exam will begin at 5:45 pm. Please arrive
between 5:30 and 5:45 and wait outside the door. The TAs and
professors will inspect your calculators (see explanation about
calculators on the syllabus) and admit you one at a time. You
will leave your bags at the front of the room. Some
reminders: Turn cell phones off. If a phone rings or
somehow disturbs the silence, the student will be asked to get up and
submit the offending phone to the TA or professor, and in the process
will lose valuable exam time and the scorn of fellow students. If
a student uses a cell phone or any other communication device during
the exam, the exam will be confiscated and the student will earn an F
on the exam. Once the exam begins, you may raise your hand to ask a
question but otherwise no talking is permitted until you have left the
room.
Students that have conflicts with other university activities (exams,
labs, etc) during the exam time should contact Prof. Bradley or Prof.
Hornbuckle immediately so that a makeup exam can be arranged.
Notice that the last day of class
is Thursday November 2nd. There will be no class on Tuesday
November 7th.
We found a minor error in our
solutions to HW6, problem 4 and have reposted this solution.
There was a typo in the coordinates used in the equation.
HW7 has been loaded on ICON and
is due
November 2nd. This
is a revised due date from the original schedule.
HW6 has been loaded on ICON and
is due
October 24th. This
is a revised due date from the original schedule.
A
nicely done reminder about logs is at http://www.physics.uoguelph.ca/tutorials/LOG/
HW5 has been loaded on
ICON. The due
date for HW5 is October 12th. This
is a revised due date from the original schedule.
A
reminder
about collaborations. Please remember that the homework
you hand in must be your own work. We have found a couple
situations where students work together and copy a common
homework. This is not acceptable and constitutes cheating.
These students will receive a zero for their homework and a warning.
Every student must work all problems and hand in their own work.
Homework 4 has
been loaded on ICON. It is due next Tuesday.

IMPORTANT: We have made a
change to HW 2 — Problem 2 is no
longer due as a part of HW 2. We are moving Problem 2, which
involves matrix calculations with Excel and Matlab, to a later homework
set. The due date for the remaining problems in HW 2 is unchanged
(Tuesday 12 September).
Some quick reminders. First, HW 2 (due on 12
September) is available on ICON (see Course Content). Second, the
solutions to HW 1 are now posted on ICON (see Course Content).
Finally, please bring a printout of your Personality Profiler report to
class on Thursday 7 September. If you have not received your
report yet, even though you completed the survey, do not worry; you
will receive this by email from Nancy Schneider before class on
Thursday. - AB

Prof. Hornbuckle is in Poland for a research conference until Monday
the 11th. Section A students should contact Prof. Bradley in her
absence.
The first exam is scheduled for
Thursday, September 21nd
5:45-7:15 PM. Please check for any conflicts. If you have
another class at that time, or another exam, you can take the EPS1 exam
earlier on the same day. Generally, the college will not allow
makeup exams for non-university scheduling conflicts. However, in
any case of a conflict, you should contact your professor (Prof. Allen Bradley or Prof. Keri Hornbuckle).
No makeup exams are allowed after the exam.

compounds. Here is an review of the science
and a
news article. - KH
In case you have difficulty
downloading the file on the vehicle data
for HW1, here it
is another way (right click on the link and choose Save Link Target
As).
Also, the number of cars in this table is in
units of MILLIONS. Please make sure your plot includes this.
HW 1 has been posted on the
Content link in ICON. The due date is
listed on the ICON events scheduler and on the class schedule pdf
document posted on the Content link. Start your homework
early. This first homework will take many hours because you have
a lot of formatting to figure out.
The Personality Profiler is
described on the schedule link in
ICON. For convenience, I repeat that info here:

To take this quiz, go to the URL link below,
enter your first & last name, then the access code 3355014.
The results will be emailed to you and interpreted in class on
September 7th. |

The quiz has been repaired.
Please take the Pre-Test quiz called
revised Pre-test. Let me know if you have troubles. - KH
Two students emailed me that the
Pre-test quiz was not accepting more
than one answer for some of the questions. So I pulled it off
like for a moment while I fix it. Hopefully I'll have it online
in short while - KH.
Two assignments have been
posted. The course Pre-Test must be completed by Thursday Sept
24th. You can find it in the course ICON web site, under the link
'Quizzes.' The Personality Profiler must be completed by August
31st. These two assignments, if completed, are worth 10 pts each
(or 10% each) of the first homework assignment. The rest of HW1
will be posted later this week.
Welcome to
59:005, Engineering
Problem
Solving
I. The lecture component of this course (Sections A,B,and C)
is
taught by Professor Keri C Hornbuckle and Professor A. Allen
Bradley. The lecture component
is integrated with a web site, run under ICON. You
need to log
onto ICON as soon as possible and make sure you have access to the
course
web
site. Within the password protected area, we (KCH and AAB) will
post all
the homework
assignments and solutions, exam dates, the syllabus, and important
links
on that site. Because it is password protected, we will
also
post your grades for the lecture portion of the course. Your
project
grades will not be posted here.
You should be able to log into ICON
(http://icon.uiowa.edu) using your HawkID and password
as assigned
by
directory services [Customer Information Desk (384-0800) or ITS Help
Desk (384-4357)]. These
help
desks can solve password problems. If you think you have the
correct HawkID and password but still cannot log into the course,
please email me.
There may be a problem that I need to fix.
I would also appreciate an email
if
you find a broken link, typo, or error in the web site.
The required textbook is Engineering Fundamentals & Problem
Solving,
by Eide, Jenison, Mashaw, and Northup (2002). A required CoursePack,
including the
Syllabus,
Handouts, Homework Assignments, and Schedules has been developed and is
posted on the ICON website. The
textbook may be purchased in the University Book Store
in the
Iowa Memorial Union the week before classes begin. All students
are
expected to have printed hardcopies of these references by
the first day of the
class.
An optional computer session will
be offered
August 29 - September 1.
This session will be held in 1245 SC and is designed to introduce
students
to Microsoft Excel. The following times are available by
