American Society of Civil Engineers


ASCE stands for the American Society of Civil Engineers. Founded in 1852, it is the oldest national professional engineering society in the United States. Our organization connects civil and environmental engineering students with other students, employers and opportunities for real-world engineering applications.


It is back for the 2015 Homecoming! The Corn Monument!

The ASCE Student Chapter and the Campus Activities Board have again constructed a Corn Monument for the 2015 Homecoming. Thanks to the many volunteers who helped with the effort!

Hawkeye Student Leadship and Service Awards

Civil & Environmental Engineering picked up three awards at the Hawkeye Awards Ceremony. ASCE won the Outstanding Student Organization Award for its collaboration with the Campus Activities Board for the Corn Monument. ASCE's Steph Then won the Leadership Legacy Award; Jon Gross was also nominated for this award. Graduate student Matt Tarnoff (and former ASCE Treasurer) won the Belinda L. Marner Outstanding GPSG Executive of the Year Award. Well done!



College of Engineering Awards

Civil & Environmental Engineering picked up six awards at the 1st Annual College of Engineering Professional Development Dinner, including Outstanding Student Organization Awards for ASCE (Collaboration) and Continental Crossings (Service). Individuals receiving awards were ASCE's Steph Then (Outstanding Student Leader), Mitch Wantock (Most Promising New Member), Rai Tokuhisa (Outstanding Research Assistant), and Professor Bill Eichinger (Outstanding Faculty Advisor). Congratulations to all!

ASCE Conrete Canoe Competition

The University of Iowa's Star Wars-themed Millennium Hawkeye took to the waters of Lake Pahoja to compete in the Midwest Region Concrete Canoe Competition. Thirteen students made the journey to Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa, for the event.



ASCE Midwest Region Student Conference

Students from the University of Iowa participated in the conference at Lakehead University, in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Katie Langenfeld won the Student Paper Presentation Competition! We also competed against eight other universities in the AISC-ASCE Steel Bridge Competition.

Revival of the Corn Monument Tradition

The ASCE Student Chapter and the Campus Activities Board revived a long-standing homecoming tradition in Fall 2014 --- the Corn Monument.
