- Introduction of members and guests
The committee met at 8:00 a.m. Each member received the agenda,
the minutes from the previous meeting, and a copy of the Annual
Activity Report.
- Approval of agenda.
All in attendance introduced themselves and John Baugh outlined
the agenda.
- Review and approval of minutes of the last meeting, July 20, 1998
in San Francisco
The minutes from the last meeting were approved unanimously.
- Status Report
- Report on the Analysis and Computation Committee Meeting
- There are currently three associated editors in the
Journal of Structural Engineering, down from the original four.
- Anyone interested is encouraged to publish theme issues of ASCE
journals.
- The merger of the committee on Computer Aided Analysis and Design
and of the committee on Methods of Analysis was approved. The name of
the new committee is Methods of Analysis.
- The Analysis and Computation Technical Committee has plans to set
up a website. The committee on Emerging Computing Technologies may be
charged with the creation, but not maintenance, of such a site.
- ASCE has some funds set aside for special projects. The limit is
$3000 per project.
- Report of the FY99 Technical Activity Report
The attending members reviewed the FY99 Technical Activity
Report dated March 29, 1999.
- Technical sessions in the 1999 Structures Congress
There is one session co-sponsored by the committee and the
committee on Optimal Structural Design: "Advanced Technical in
Conceptual Design", chaired by Colby Swan.
- Current Business
- Technical sessions planned for the 2000 Structures Congress
The Emerging Computing Technology Committee is sponsoring two
technical sessions at the 2000 Structures Congress, scheduled for May
8-10, 2000 in Philadelphia, PA:
- Two proposed sessions have been merged into one. They are:
"Emerging Methods for Performance Based Optimization of Civil
Structural Systems" proposed by Colby Swan and "Emerging
Computing Technology in Structural Engineering" proposed by Meg
Neggers.
- "High Performance Computing" proposed by John Baugh and
Elisa Sotelino.
- New Business
- Technical sessions for the 2001 Structures Congress
The session proposals for the 2001 Structures Congress are due
on November 19,1999. The committee will propose the following
technical sessions:
- Emerging Computing Technologies, co-chaired by Jim Garrett,
John Baugh and Bozidar Stojadinovic.
- High Performance Computing,
chaired by Elisa D. Sotelino. This session will be co-sponsored with
the committee on Methods of Analysis.
- New Initiatives
Some activities identified by the committee:
- Development of a Web site for our parent committee, Analysis and Computation, along with
some suggestions and possible support for other A&C subcommittees.
- Publication of a theme issue in the Journal of Structural
Engineering based on papers presented in the sessions sponsored by ECT
at the 2000 Structures Congress in Philadelphia. We may need to issue a
"formal" call-for-papers to bring in some new people and
ideas. Of course, we have a June 1 deadline for abstracts ... post to
newsgroups?
- ECT Workshop to be held at the 2000 Structures Congress, with
outside speakers from the computing industry, possibly from around
Philadelphia. We need to look into travel support / honoraria for
guests, possibly from ASCE Special Project funds. Another option would
be a NSF-sponsored workshop. Elisa D. Sotelino, John Baugh and Colby
Swan will look into this possibility.
- Member recruitment, by having current members seek out new ones for
various committee activities, such as presenting papers, sponsoring
sessions, etc. Each member is encouraged to provide the names of two
people working in Emerging Computing Technologies related issues in
Structural Engineering. John Baugh will collect the names.
- Look for opportunities for collaboration with our European
counterparts at EG-SEA-AI.
- Other business, announcements
None
- Adjourn
The committee adjourned at 11:30 AM.
