The primary objectives of this committee are:
· To bring emerging computing technologies that may be applicable to some part of the structural engineering process to the attention of the structural engineering community; and
· To transfer to the structural engineering community an understanding of these technologies so that they can experiment with them.
The "client" of this committee’s efforts is the community of structural engineers (both in academia and industry) and thus information dissemination should be targeted to it.
In order to call attention to and improve understanding of emerging computing technology, we as a committee will seek to disseminate information about new computing technology (and new applications of existing computing technology) in the form of sponsored workshops/tutorials, public demonstrations, conference sessions, monographs, and other mechanisms such as videos and multimedia products.
Our basic approach to using these information dissemination devices will be as follows. IF a topic is relatively new, we will sponsor workshops, tutorials, and public demonstrations on the subjects to bring a greater awareness of the technology to the structural engineering community. We might also work to produce introductory videos or PC-based multimedia presentations on the topic. If a topic is somewhat more mature (i.e., real-world applications are available to be discussed), we will sponsor conference sessions on the topic, with the hope of attracting contributions from the structural engineering community. Once we as a committee feel that we possess enough of an understanding of the topic and feel there is a need, we may organize a monograph on the topic. The idea will be to have workshops, conference sessions, and monographs all as simultaneous activities of this committee on several different topics at various stages of maturity. It is also anticipated that an emerging computing technology (or application) will likely move from workshop and sponsored conference sessions to a monograph in a natural multi-year progression.
