STRUCTURAL DIVISION, ASCE Report on Activities FY99 Report on Plans FY00 Committee on: Emerging Computing Technology TAC: Analysis and Computation Submitted by: John W. Baugh Jr., Chair Date: 29 March 1999 ************************************************************* I. Administration A. Membership (number of committee members): 14 members B. Meetings: 1. Subcommittee and Task Committees (reporting to this committee): None II. Papers in FY98 (10/97 - 9/98) Journal of Structural Engineering A. Number of papers reviewed for Journal: 8 as committee activity B. Number of Papers published in Journal: 0 as committee activity III. Publications (Special Publications, Manuals, other) A. Publications completed during FY99 (10/98 - 10/99) (title, where and when published) none B. Publications in preparation (title, expected completion date) - WWW Structural Engineering Information Repository Our plans for building a Web-based information repository have been postponed until we can identify a group of members who are willing to take up this task. C. Publications planned for the future (topic, expected starting date) IV. Technical Sessions (ASCE Annual Convention, Structures Congresses, Specialty Conferences, other meetings) A. Sessions held during FY99 (10/98 - 9/99) - Technical Session in 1999 Structures Congress April 21, 1999, New Orleans, LA "Advanced Technologies in Conceptual Design" Colby Swan, University of Iowa Co-sponsored with Optimal Structural Design (OSD) B. Sessions Planned for FY00 (10/99 - 9/00) - Technical Session in 2000 Structures Congress April 2000, Philadelphia, PA "Emerging Computing Technology in Structural Engineering" Meg Neggers, Premisys Corporation Jim Garrett, Carnegie Mellon University Kincho Law, Stanford University - Technical Session in 2000 Structures Congress April 2000, Philadelphia, PA "High Performance Computing" John Baugh, North Carolina State University Elisa Sotelino, Purdue University C. Sessions Planned for the Future: - Sessions and workshops are being planned for the 2001 Structures Congress V. Other activities (type of activities, action completed or planned) A. Completed during FY99 (10/98 - 10/99) - Committee Web Page (ongoing) We have a World Wide Web page that describes the mission of the committee and its associated activities. The URL for this page is: http://www.ce.cmu.edu/~garrett/ect/ - Interaction with European Community (ongoing) In 1998 Baugh reported on ECT activities in Switzerland at a meeting of the European Group for Structural Engineering Applications of AI, EG-SEA-AI (~60 persons). ECT and EG-SEA-AI are exploring opportunities for joint activity. - ECT Workshop and Mini-Exhibition During this year's committee meeting we are putting on an open but informal workshop to allow committee members and any interested visitors an opportunity to demonstrate the emerging computing technologies they are developing. We anticipate taking the better part of a day, with several breaks, for this activity, which allows more flexibility than the usual session and presentation format. B. Planned for FY00 - ECT Workshop and Mini-Exhibition At the 2000 Structures Congress we plan to hold another workshop, which may evolve in size and scope based on the results of the preliminary 1999 activity. C. Planned for the future VI. Plans for the Future (goals, areas of opportunity, etc.) - Recruitment Although we have a core of dedicated members, we need to continue recruiting new ones to remain viable. In recent years fewer and fewer of our committee members have attended the Structures Congress. To effect change, we need to project to the community a commitment on the part of SEI to state-of-the-art computing and attempt to draw in this segment of the structural engineering community. VII. List activities that have been delayed or tabled due to lack of funding. - None.
