Steve C. Mitchell, graduate student of electrical and computer engineering, received Michael B. Merickel Award for Best Student Paper of the Medical Imaging 2002 symposium in San Diego, California.
Each year this award is presented to the student author of an outstanding paper. Nominated papers are reviewed by the symposium chairs and the winner chosen based on originality, relevance to the field, and quality of research. The paper is entitled "Segmentation of cardiac MR volume data using 3D active appearance models" is co-authored by B. Lelieveldt, J. Bosch, R. van der Geest and J. Reiber from Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands, and M. Sonka from Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Iowa. Research addressed in this paper is a result of long-term collaboration between the University of Iowa and Leiden Medical Center.
