More complete structure of the vortical flow around the DTMB 5415 geometry can be seen from CFD simulations, such as
CFD Simulations by Sakamoto (2009)
Simulations are using Unsteady RANS and DES CFD code, CFDSHIP-IOWA (Ver.4).
Simulations are for pure yaw maneuver with rmax = 0.3
Vortical flow structure is visualized by using the Q-criterion (Hunt et al., 1988); Q = 30 iso-surface with colored by the normalized relative helicity density level.
Several major vortices are observed, of which shape, size, location, and sign are changing dynamically in time along with the yaw motion.

Vortices in the SPIV measured flow field are visualized with the axial vorticity ωx contours.
