Tips for Success in Engineering
You can be successful in engineering if you …
- Seek to improve your communication skills,
especially technical communication skills
- Maintain solid character traits, e.g.,
honesty & integrity (top criteria for employers), dependability, compassion
- Get involved in appropriate student organizations
(professional, social, service) or extracurricular activities
- Make wise choices; your moment-by-moment
decisions will determine either your success or your failure; ask yourself
… Will my choice help or hinder my success?
- Don’t get discouraged by a low grade, but make sure
you work to improve your situation (visit with instructor,
TA, CoE tutor or other student to seek help); don’t let a bad situation
continue to get worse; you’re a bright student, you can be successful.
- Take advantage of services offered by the College
of Engineering, e.g., library resources, résumé
building, co-op/internship assignments, job search strategies, tutoring,
student mentors, advising, study abroad
- Use effective time management skills
(maintain daily planner; set priorities; allocate and protect scheduled
time for classes, study, homework, eating, sleeping & fun); use farmer’s
approach ─ you reap what you sow.
- Complete and turn in (on time) all homework, lab and
project assignments; work ahead of due dates, at least two
days, if possible
- Review lecture notes daily; seek help
for areas you don’t understand
- Attend all classes; listen to lectures; ask questions
